5 Tips for Replacing Your Interior Door
Rénovation · May 28, 2024 · By the Beau-frère à louer team
1. Is your door size standard?
If the door you're replacing is from a recent home, the replacement will be easier because over time measurements have been standardized and a standard exists for their dimensions. If, on the other hand, you have a door for an older home, it's important to take into consideration the height, width and thickness of the door so it fits with its future location. It's also important to know the dimensions to make sure you don't make mistakes when buying a substantial door or if you want to plan for a custom-made door.
2. Solid core or hollow core door?
There are two main types of doors: a solid core door or a hollow core door. The first is more expensive because it has better thermal and sound insulation. Solid core doors are also heavier and more imposing because their interior can be made of solid wood, polystyrene, particle board or laminated wood. This differs from a hollow core door which is made of an alveolar structure in wood or lightweight plastic tube. This type of door is therefore lighter and less expensive. It's therefore important to ask yourself which type of door best suits the project you want to undertake.
3. Choose your style wisely
Several materials exist to coordinate the aesthetics of the room with the appearance of the door. Several elements can be customised such as colour and type of finish. It's therefore possible to find something that will match the composition of the room while also having acoustic and thermal qualities. Depending on the room, it's also important to consider which type of material best suits the use of the room.
4. Think carefully about your installation choice
There are several types of installations. Once you've chosen the composition and materials you like, you must then consider what space the open door can occupy in the room. The main types of openings are the swing door, the sliding door (recessed or on rails) and the folding door. Depending on the available space for the door, many options are available to you to maximise space. The swing door is the most popular option. It's distinguished by the hinges that allow the door to open and rotate. Another very popular option is the sliding door. This saves a lot of space because it recesses directly into the wall or slides perpendicular to the wall opening. This greatly reduces the consideration we must have for other objects present in the room. There are also other installation styles such as the folding door which is reminiscent of an accordion version of the door or the double-leaf door. These are mainly used for closet doors.
5. Enhance your home's style.
Each door is unique and can be customised to give personality to your rooms, so it's important to research the options available to you regarding different hinges, handles and locks! Depending on where your new door will be located, several styles can be used to create interesting rooms and designs. For example, if you want to use a door to hide a storage area, it's always possible to camouflage the door by using the same colours or materials as the walls. Interior doors are therefore very important for giving a unique look to your rooms.
