Starting your handyman business in Quebec: the steps (and the shortcut)
Carrière · June 22, 2026 · By the Beau-frère à louer team
You're good with your hands. The people around you are already asking you to come fix a door, put together some furniture, redo a stretch of flooring, or hang a shelf. At some point, the question comes up: "why don't I go out on my own?" Great idea. But before you plant your sign, it's worth knowing exactly what it takes to start your handyman business in Quebec, step by step.
My name is Daniel Lauzon. In 2009, I left a sales director position to start out as a handyman in the Montreal area. I went through every one of these steps myself. So here's the honest picture of the traditional path — and, at the end, a much shorter route.
Step 1 — Choose your structure and register your business
The very first decision is the legal structure. Most people start as a self-employed worker (sole proprietorship), because it's simple and inexpensive. If you use a name other than your own, you have to register with the Registraire des entreprises du Québec. Later on, some choose to incorporate for tax and protection reasons. From that point on, you also have to think about your bookkeeping, your tax numbers (GST/QST once your revenue is high enough), and a separate bank account.
Step 2 — Check whether you need an RBQ licence
This is the step a lot of people underestimate. For small odd jobs and minor handiwork, you can often work without a licence. But the moment you touch construction or renovation work for pay, the Régie du bâtiment du Québec requires an RBQ licence. Without it, you can't legally bid on that work or invoice for it as a contractor. Getting that licence requires exams (management, safety, execution), time, and money — often several months and a few thousand dollars. It's the wall that discourages a lot of good workers.
Step 3 — Protect yourself with the right insurance
Working in people's homes means handling their belongings and their property. Professional liability insurance isn't a luxury: it's what protects you if something gets damaged during a job. Depending on your situation, you may also have to register with CNESST. These protections cost money every year, but without them, a single accident can wipe out months of work.
Step 4 — Set yourself up with tools, a vehicle, and a system
You'll need your toolbox, a reliable vehicle to get around, and a simple way to book your appointments, send your quotes, and get paid. Nothing rocket-science, but it takes an upfront investment and a minimum of organization so you don't lose track between job sites.
Step 5 — Finding your first clients (the real challenge)
Here's the step that makes or breaks a new business. The licence and the insurance get sorted out. But filling your schedule from scratch is a whole other game. You have to build an online presence, collect reviews, get referrals, respond quickly to requests, and build a reputation. At the start, you often spend as much time looking for clients as you do working. That's normal — but it's exhausting, and a lot of new businesses run out of steam right there.
The shortcut: get started right now, under the Beau-frère à louer brand
What if you kept everything you love about the idea of going out on your own — the autonomy, the freedom, the income — while skipping the heaviest steps? That's exactly what we offer at Beau-frère à louer. Instead of building your business alone, you come work under our RBQ licence and our brand. Here's what that changes:
- Full autonomy — you manage your schedule and your way of working, like you would on your own.
- No RBQ licence to obtain — you work under ours, so no exams and no months of waiting before you can start.
- Less paperwork and fewer startup costs — you keep your cash instead of going into debt to get going.
- Clients who come to you — our brand, our marketing, and our reputation (4.9/5 across hundreds of reviews) bring you contracts, instead of making you chase after them.
- A team behind you — insurance, coaching, tools, and other specialists around you.
In other words: you start now, with the structure already built, instead of waiting months and risking your money.
Who is it for?
For the handyman, the renovator, or the specialist (painter, carpenter, installer, finisher…) who:
- has the talent and the experience, but doesn't want to wait months before making a living;
- wants to be their own boss without carrying the paperwork and financial risk alone;
- would rather spend their days doing the trade than hunting for clients.
